Why This Guide Exists
Don't Buy A Truck
Based On One Number.
A Ford truck's towing capacity can change significantly depending on engine, axle ratio, cab, bed length, drivetrain, GVWR, GCWR, tires, packages and other equipment. Two trucks with the same engine can therefore have different maximum trailer ratings.
That's especially important when shopping used. The badge on the tailgate does not tell you the complete towing story. Use the exact model year and configuration when comparing towing capacity.
Important towing warning
Published maximum trailer ratings are not a blanket rating for every truck in a model family. Never exceed the vehicle's GVWR, GAWR or GCWR. Trailer tongue or pin weight also counts against available payload.

Towing Terms
That Matter
Maximum trailer weight is only one part of the towing equation.
GAWR
Gross Axle Weight Rating. The maximum allowable weight supported by an individual axle and its associated components.
GCWR
Gross Combined Weight Rating. The maximum combined weight of the truck and trailer for a specified configuration.
Axle Ratio
A numerically higher axle ratio can provide gearing advantages for towing, but the factory rating still depends on the complete vehicle configuration.
Payload
Payload includes people, cargo and trailer tongue or pin weight. A high trailer rating does not mean every truck can safely carry that trailer at maximum weight.
SRW vs DRW
Single-rear-wheel and dual-rear-wheel configurations can have substantially different payload and towing capabilities, especially on F-350.

This page is intended to organize Ford's published towing information into a dealer-friendly reference. Configuration-specific ratings should be verified against the applicable Ford towing guide and the actual truck before towing.
- 2026 F-150: Ford 2026 F-150 towing guide used for current towing ranges and configuration requirements.
- 2026 F-250 / F-350: Ford 2026 Super Duty towing guide used for current conventional, 5th-wheel and gooseneck ratings.
- Older Ford trucks: Historical model-year Ford towing charts should be used rather than estimating a rating from engine output alone.
